Normal consciousness consists of beta waves, which vibrate between 14 and 20 hertz. Beta waves occur when we are focused on daily activities in the external world and also when we experience strong negative emotions. Calmness and greater perception or awareness are characterized by alpha waves, whose frequency cycle ranges from 8 to 13 hertz. Periods of maximum creativity, meditation and sleep are characterized by theta waves, which range between 4 and 7 hertz, deep sleep. , deep relaxation, deep meditation and the state of unconsciousness produce delta waves that vibrate between 0.5 and 3 hertz. The slower the brain waves, the more relaxed, satisfied and at peace we feel.

Similar to meditation, yoga or other practices aimed at unifying the mind and body, music with a rhythm of about 60 time units or pulses per minute, such as certain baroque music, new age or ambient music…can change the state of consciousness bringing it closer to beta waves, improving attention and well-being in general. Drumming can also transport the listener to a range of theta brain waves, introducing them to altered states of consciousness.

Playing music at home, in the office or at school can serve to generate a dynamic balance between the left brain hemisphere, which is more logical, and the right, more intuitive hemisphere, this interrelationship is believed to be the foundation of creativity.

Whether you are at work or at home, awake or in a state that is difficult to concentrate, listening to baroque or ambient music for 15 minutes can help you reestablish consistent perception and increase mental organization.

*Music influences breathing

Breathing is rhythmic. Unless we are climbing stairs or lying down, we typically take 25 to 35 breaths per minute. Deeper, slower breathing is the most optimal…It helps control emotions, promotes calm, deeper thinking and improves metabolism.

By slowing down the tempo (movement or speed of the music) or listening to music with longer, slower sounds, you can usually make your breathing deeper and slower, thus calming your mind. Gregorian chant, new age, ambient music, and singing bowls often produce this effect.

*music influences heart rate and blood pressure

The same thing happens to the heart, the slower the better. This helps create less physical tension and stress, calms the mind and helps the body heal. People suffering from hypertension would benefit from it.

*music reduces muscle tension and improves body movement and coordination

The auditory nerve connects the inner ear to all the muscles of the body through the autonomic nervous system. Therefore, both sound and vibration influence muscle strength, flexibility and tone.

*Music influences temperature

All sounds and music have a subtle influence on body temperature and hence our ability to adapt to changes in heat or cold. Soft music can lower it for us, music does this by influencing blood circulation, the speed of heart and respiratory rhythms. So pleasant music with a strong rhythm will help us warm up.

*music increases endorphin levels

Endorphins, which are the brain’s own opiates, have been the subject of much medical research in recent years and several agree that they are capable of reducing pain and inducing a natural euphoria.

At Stamford University, Goldstein found that of all those who participated in the experiment as listeners… all experienced euphoria while listening to music.

The richness of music enables the body to produce its own anesthetics and improve immune activity. How does it happen? This euphoria is the consequence of the release of endorphins by the pituitary gland, that is, a consequence of the electrical activity that spreads in a region of the brain connected to the control centers of the limbic and autonomic systems.

*music regulates stress hormones

Anesthesiologists report that the level of stress hormones lowers in the blood in people who listen to relaxing music and some even eliminate the need for medications. Among these are adrenocorticotropic, prolactic, and human growth hormone.

*Music and sound stimulate immune activity

Insufficient oxygen in the blood is an important cause of immunodeficiency and degenerative diseases. Singing, singing, oxygenates the blood. In a study carried out at the University of Michigan, they found that listening to 15 to 20 minutes of music daily increased interleukin levels in the blood. These are a family of proteins that are involved in the production of blood and platelets, stimulation of lymphocytes and cell protection. It was also found that these people have a lower level of cortisol.

*music changes our perception of space

Slow music contains more space between sounds than fast music. This influences how we perceive the space around us… certain music helps the brain form mental images and recognize variations in objects. In hospitals it helps people feel not trapped.

Well the truth is that music…

*music changes our perception of time

*music reinforces memory and learning (concentration, improve memory)

*music promotes productivity

* Music promotes romance and sexuality

*music stimulates digestion

*music promotes resistance (aerobics, spinning, bicycle)

*music improves unconscious receptivity to symbolism (film directors know that without a good soundtrack the images do not arrive in the same way)

*music generates a feeling of security and well-being

As you can see what we would do if we didn’t have music in our lives.

Rosa Puerto

It has been shown time and time again that music and self-generated sounds can modify brain waves.
