There are a large number of elements included in shamanic healing. The use of creativity and therapeutic ritual is one of the most powerful. The process of opening to inspiration is manifested through various forms of art and music allowing individuals through their inclusion to be active participants in their own healing.

Modern cultures tend to focus on the aesthetics of creativity.

Do you have a good voice? Did the paint look good on you?

When used in a healing, it is the process, not the end result, that is most important. Our being does not care if we are able to carry a melody or if we are color blind. The opening of the creative centers allows this healing, the transformative energy permeates our being and achieves beneficial change.

THE CREATIVE VOICE

This is important for a culture that has largely lost its creative voice. Few of us today sing whenever we feel like it for the pure pleasure of expressing what is in our hearts. It’s rare to see someone dancing happily without taking into account that anyone could be watching. And very few dedicate themselves to painting or sculpture, unless they feel good. Our creative energies are restricted and stagnant, creating blockages and limitations in our lives and our bodies.

The use of the voice in shamanic healing is probably more common than the use of the drum. Otherworldly music and shamanic power songs have been described in almost every culture around the world. Vocal sounds are used to induce and carry trance, to evoke power, to unite energies, to communicate otherworldly experience, and to heal.

Many of us have lost the ability to use our natural voice. We have been trained since childhood to communicate in an acceptable way oriented to specific situations. To free your voice, start by just humming a tone to yourself while you’re alone. Listen to the tone without judgment and allow it to find its own field. Feel your head and throat vibrate with the sound.

Once you feel comfortable with the hum, move on to simple chants, such as the Om sound, and feel your body vibrate with the tone. When you are ready, let whatever combination of sounds flow through you. Allow your voice to take control, and you will flow freely with the sound, without judgment.

Once you have freed your voice, you can ask for your power song. Shamans around the world have traditionally used special songs. Power songs are used to induce trance, or to have a healing effect, to commune with spirit guides, and to raise the energy of sacred places.
